The Virtual World Society facilitates Indiginous communites, with capacity building and technolgy experts, to support community-led initiatives for the betterment of the people, land, and future.
Michelle O'Brien, Program Coordinator of Indiginous Studies, at Georgian College, Ontario, CA, and program graduate turned program educator, Angeline King, have been facilitating language learning for Ojibwe / Anishnaabemowin in Virtual Spaces, using Engage platform. Five worlds, created by the expert team, BSDXR, founded by VWS Board Member, Dan Blair, offer interactive language learning environments which facilitate individual and group language discovery and immersive education.Â
New partnerships with elementaty and secondary students in Saskatchewan, with the Simcoe County District School Board as well as post secondary students at Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies (SIIT), expands access to the language learning virtual worlds and builds new community relationships. Additionally, SIIT created a Cree-Y language learning virtual world.
"The aim of these partnerships is to offer a new teaching tool to those learning about Indigenous language, cultures and treaties, address the Canadian Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action, and help revitalize and preserve Indigenous languages." (Experience Georgian)
"Creating innovative virtual worlds and then teaching Indigenous languages in them has truly been a labour of love, and we are so excited to collaborate with educational partners to make Indigenous languages and cultures accessible to even more people. Helping pave the way for Georgian as a leader in Indigenous education is a dream come true."
– Michele O’Brien, Indigenous Studies Coordinator and Virtual Reality Educator, Georgian College.
